Cambridge Design and Construction Awards, Best New Large Building 2017

Description

Cowan Court is a 68-room hall of residence and the first completely new court since the College was founded as a memorial to Sir Winston Churchill.

A new accommodation block with 68 study bedrooms, shared kitchens, and meeting room, and associated external works together with alterations to South Court building (grade II listed) to widen pedestrian / wheelchair access.

With glulam timber beam construction and clad in 100-year-old oak from French railway carriages, the court has a striking appearance. Like the original buildings it comprises 3 storeys of student bedrooms arranged around a square inner court which is densely planted with birch trees rather than the traditional lawn.

The site is adjacent to the grade II listed courts, and within a conservation area. Beacon were involved from the outset and led discussions with the Council, including its independent design review panel. We actively consulted Sport England (as the works were close to the cricket field and required the relocation of a tennis court) and the Twentieth Century Society to gain their support for the proposals.

Outcome

Planning and listed building consent was granted in July 2014 and the building was operational in Autumn of 2016.
