Cowan Court has been named Cambridge’s Best New Building 2016 (over £2m) by the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI)

Beacon are delighted that Cowan Court, designed by 6a Architects, was awarded the prestigious prize of Best New Large Building of 2016 by the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI). The prize was announced at the awards ceremony held on 14 th March 2017 at the MacGrath Centre of St Catharine’s College.

We provided planning and heritage advice throughout the design, planning and construction phases of the scheme. The original College buildings are Grade II listed and lie within the West Cambridge Conservation Area. The building has been well received critically, and has been reviewed in The Guardian , The Architect’s Journal, and Building Design.

Cowan Court provides accommodation for 68 students, including three rooms adapted for disabled students. The construction of term-time accommodation for all undergraduate students throughout their degree.

It was designed to sit comfortably with the concrete and brick materials of the original Grade II listed College buildings (designed by Sheppard Robson) but is an all timber construction. Uniquely, the elevations are clad in timber from French railway carriages and the internal courtyard has a birch ‘forest’.
