Unanimous Approval for Signature Senior Lifestyle Development in Wandsworth
1 March 2017 | Posted by Sophie Hetherington

Beacon have assisted an application to construct an assisted-living apartment block for the elderly in Wandsworth, regenerating a derelict site

Beacon are pleased to announce that permission to construct and run a care home for the frail elderly at 39-41 East Hill & 94 North Side, Wandsworth was granted to Signature Senior Lifestyle last week. Beacon provided heritage support to this multidisciplinary application, which will deliver high-quality residential, nursing and dementia care to occupants of the site.

Planning permission was previously granted to replace the derelict garage and office buildings on the site with a 63-apartment block, following permission for the construction of a 122-bed hotel on the site. However, as neither proposal was carried forward, Signature proposed their application as a means of regenerating the site.

The site is within the setting of the Wandsworth Town Conservation Area, and the Wandsworth Common Conservation Area. To the west of the site is the unusual Mount Nod Huguenot Burial Ground, which contains five Grade II Listed table tombs. The cemetery itself was considered as a non-designated heritage asset given it inclusion on the local Inventory of Historic Spaces compiled by the London Parks and Gardens Trust.

The heritage statement demonstrated that great care had been taken to keep the proposed development within the footprint of the previously approved schemes, and to maintain the design elements which were previously considered successful. Changes from the consented scheme were assessed and were not considered to have an unacceptable impact on the setting of the heritage assets. The scheme drew unanimous support from Councillors, and Beacon look forward to seeing the project come to fruition.
